April fishing

April has been a super month with good catches of seatrout, snook and redfish.

Northern winds shallowed out some of the backcountry but when we were able to get there the fishing was super. Night snook fishing was exellent even with some very cold and windy nights.

Early morning grass flats produced some prodigious trout and snook, with a 35" snook caught on a jigged on a 1/8 oz head with a Z-man jerk bait.

Tarpon are showing at present but we still wait for the main migration to arrive. There are a few fish in Boca Grande pass but there are more fishing boats than fish right now. The entire southwest coast goes a little crazy when a few pre-migration fish show up... The "Pass" becomes a ticket worthy show! Some tarpon are south of Boca Grande, some are north in Charlotte Harbor.... The main migration generally shows around Cinco De Mayo and what a sight it is if you are fortunate enough to see it....The pass turns "Silver" as fish flood into the pass to rest and recuperate from their journey.

We are also catching Mackerel, Jacks and Pompano on fly throughout the day, Water temp today was 76, about average for this time of year.

Fishing will only get better through July with lots of 100lb tarpon to be caught.

I have a few days open for Tarpon in July if interested.

Remember to just have fun and soak in the beauty of the surroundings when you are on the water.....a lost of people miss it..... catching a few fish is also exciting though!

Best of Luck,

March Fishing

20170312_110447.jpg

March fly fishing has started out with a bang, eventhough we have had low water, winds and cold temperatures. The days have warmed up as has the water and the fish have started to move in the backcountry.  Night snook has been productive... Terry Byce of Sarasota had a great night of snook fishing with 15-20 snook up to 26 inches. Barry Sagotsky fished a couple of days and caught trout, big ladyfish, snook and a monster Redfish to round out his Backcountry slam....Ed Borman caught trout, ladyfish and snook with his son Justin who managed his first snook on fly.

Greg Haller of Oregon caught March Refish, Snook and trout for a slam plus a Big Sheepshead on fly which is unusual.

March should get better as the weather and water warms... we have seen a few tarpon cruising around .. There are reports of fish in Boca Grande pass at present.

I still have some dates open for Tarpon in May and June....should be a great year!

See you soon,

Capt. Al

January fly fishing 2018

Still catching some nice reds and snook even with the fluctuating barometer, cold fronts and some high winds. With North winds blowing the water out of the backcountry fishing creeks and rivers are the best bet  to hook up.  Bill Nevins from Naples Florida had to endure 25mph winds all day but still managed a backwater slam....redfish,snook,and trout.  Water temp did hit 70 which helped.  Tripletail fly fishing is very good right now if we can get out on the beach...fish to 20lbs reported.... There are also Kingfish being caught and some Blackfin tuna out about 10 miles.

December Fly Fishing

20171218_130052.jpg

Sightfishing for Redfish has been consistently good poling Mangrove shorelines in the backcountry.  On average anglers are getting close to a dozen shots a day at quality fish.

Snook are still taking slow moving baitfish patterns and well as trout.

The scenic pictures give you an idea of the water we fish for REds...the birds are wading at low tide...one hour passes, and we wade those flats for "Tailing Reds"

Water is Gin Clear.....

Charter dates still available in December.

Happy Holidays,

Capt. Al

November Fishing

November has started off with a bang with good catches of snook and trout....and now the Redfish are showing up and are eating flies like crazy.  We are entering the negative tides of the winter and are looking for tailing fish and then fishing the incoming tide near the Mangroves where visibility is good for reds.

Epic nights of snook fishing are happening!!! Lots of fish as water temp is still 70 degrees at night and the snook are chewing on both tides.

Terry Byce of Bradenton absolutely whacked them showing great casting skills and knowledge of fly presentation.  Once again, the"Twinkie" , got them going  and they never stopped eating it.  When Terry landed is 43rd snook of the night.....he was worn out and ready for beddy bye!

The days are cooler as are the nights and water temps are in high 60's and low 70's and fish are active and eating.

Still seeing Tarpon rolling about but haven 't targeted them lately.

Great time to fish!!!!

Keep that rod bent!

October Fishing

October has been a decent month so far with good catches of fly caught snook in and around Boca Grande.  Early morning topwater gurglers are doing the trick and then switching to baitfish patterns later in the morning.  Redfish have been sparse but we are getting decent shots at some backwater reds. Trout fishing is good with dailycatches of 10 to 20 fish.

There are still tarpon lingering about the harbor.

The False Albacore are on the beachbut show sporadically throughout the day, they are a blast on fly and we have had good success this last week. Water temps are falling from 88 degrees to around 80 and the fish seem to move better as does the bait.  There is plenty of bait here in the Harbor and on the beach...Pelicans and Terns are dialed into a constant buffet of anchovies, herring and pilchards. Month should get better as water temps fall and rain slackens.

Good time to fish

Capt. Al

Fly fishing snook....Anywhere available!

Finding and fishing the ubiquitous snook on fly can be very rewarding. Went looking at different areas to locate them and found a bonanza of them inland. Also fishing Charlotte Harbor yielded some very nice fish.

Tarpon still here

Tarpon are still here but not in the numbers of May and jUNE. Charlotte Harbor and the backcountry have Tarpon cruising and feeding on the buffet of ladyfish, Threadfins and Herring .

Snook fishing is still good on morning topwater flies like Gurglers and Creaseflies.

Get out early and get off water by 10am for best results

Billy and the Beast

Billy Moser of Pennsylvania the consumate fly fisherman jumped  and released three Tarpon on JUne 2.  The fights were no longer than 30 minutes each. The fish went from 9olbs to about 105lbs.  We got two on a new Shrimp pattern we developed.  After the fights we enjoyed a nice cerveza at the Mexican Restaurant.  Nice going Billy

Tarpon are here and plentiful if you are in the right place at the right tide.

Tarpon flood the Boca Grand coastline

After several storms, cold fronts and high winds and after leaving the pass and going offshore for a couple of days, the Tarpon are back and with a vengeance.

Having 20 to 50 good shots a day at these silver missles....

Three jumped yesterday but 0 landed, but a great day ....

Fishing should continue to be good for next couple of weeks before they migrate offshore to spawn....

Tarpon fishing

Boca Grande Pass is holding lots of tarpon at present but we are still waiting for major migration to arrive which should be any day.

There are tarpon appearing in the backwater of Charlotte Harbor at present and it is possible to get good shots at them during certain times of the day and at ceratain tides. We have already boated a 100lb and 130 lb tarpon so far.  There are also fish off of Pine Island, Cayo Costa and Captiva.

Snook fishing is good at present with lots of hungry fish in the mangroves of the backcountry and flats.  Lots of shorelines to explore while quietly poling through the mangroves.

Time to get the 12weights lined up and ready!!
